Looks like they've done it.
Mozilla announced that they now hold the Guinness World Record for the most software downloaded in 24 hours. Their web site also shows that the total number of downloads of nearly 30 millions.

"With more than 15,000 improvements, Firefox 3 is faster, safer and smarter than ever before", at least according to the Mozilla Foundation. They are so confident about it that they are aiming to set a Guinness World Record for software downloads in 24 hours with Firefox 3 - the rub being that there is still no such record officially set.
And today is the big day!
You can take part in the operation and follow it here. If they get anywhere close to their target, this could probably get really busy. But the download sites are still running - see Mozilla Europe or Mozilla.org for instance.

As explained by Percy Cabello on Mozilla Links, "Release Candidate 1" means that this will be elect as the final Firefox 3 unless "some major bug [is] reported".

I've had version 3.0b05 running on my Linux laptop since the end of April, and do not have to complain about stability, nor speed. Particularly worthy of interest is Places - an integrated history and bookmarks interface. Regarding the look and feel of the new version, I'm genuinely impressed by the autocomplete list in the location bar and the smooth tab scrolling.
